Artist Statement
As an oil painter, my images align with the tradition of poetic realism, a movement defined by lyrical realism with a cinematic, yet non-narrative, vibe. My process is strongly rooted in the natural world, every painting inspired by living in the Sierra Nevadas and trekking around Lake Tahoe.
My goal is to capture not only the outstanding natural beauty of the region’s landscape but also my experience of place and wonder. Standing before the sublime, I am humbled, yet connected, painting moments that are fleeting, yet indelible. Mark Twain once wrote of the Sierras,“it is the land of light.” I find deep resonance, and motivation in his phrase and in sharing the epic adventure of getting and being here.
I paint to remind people of our shared connection to natural spaces, and to inspire others to explore, enjoy, remember and protect them. My journey as an easel painter began after 25 years in corporate leadership roles, where I learned about the importance of vision, perseverance, and working with purpose. Since stepping away from that world of pressure and consequence, I’ve been painting every day, capturing the spirit of the places and freedom I am so fortunate to navigate.
Traveling over 9,000 miles across America in search of the right place to anchor my family and my painting practice not only rekindled my artistic ambitions for my post-corporate life, the journey cemented my commitment to painting the great outdoors from lived experience.
Intensively studying the foundational principles of realistic art in an atelier and with individualized instruction, I learned to balance discipline with spontaneity, while heeding the best practices that ensure high-quality, archival work.
I approach landscape painting as both an expressive encounter and an invitation to universal connection. My works begin outdoors, where I sketch or paint “plein air” and in the moment. Back in my home-based studio in Lake Tahoe, I use my field studies to develop formal oil paintings that aim to both describe and transcend the immediate scene.
Growing up on three continents, I’ve come to appreciate the wide variety of experiences a life of moving around afforded me. Looking back, I see how encountering so many different kinds of people and places caused me to seek out, and value the things that connect us all. However grand Humanity’s plans become, Nature is the ultimate reminder of the true place each person holds in the Universe: here only briefly, we are but a tiny part of it all. Painting the elemental grandeur I now call home, I am most keenly aware that we are also a part of something profound and eternal —each, a unique part of the all and everything, looking back into itself.
My work reflects this duality, offering viewers something beyond the day to day: a moment for pause and wonder.
